Merc's Compact GLA

Mercedes Benz has recently unveiled its latest compact SUV which is bound for South Africa around the middle of 2014.

As seen from the caption, the GLA certainly doesn't share a whole lot with its GL cousin. The GLA at 4.41 meters in length, 1.80 meters wide and 1.49 meters in height is a smaller and more agile than the GL. While possibly more agile than the GL it does lack in the capabilities arena when on the unbeaten track but capable on the soft off-roader sections.

With the GLA's smooth and classy lines running from the front wheel arches through to the rear arches and the sleek and refreshing fascia of the GLA, there is no doubt that with the streamlined silhouette the GLA will be fuel efficient. The rear end of the vehicle is too sleek in design incorporating a spoiler which tails off at the end of the roofline.

Macpherson struts up front and an independent multilink at the rear will fuse with the GLA's chassis. Safety features will include optional lane tracking, blind spot and lane keeping monitors as well as park assist.

The engine lineup for the upcoming GLA will include a 1.6 petrol engine, a 2.0 litre petrol engine pushing out between 116kw in the GLA200 to 157kw in the GLA250. The diesel lineup will include a 2.2 litre 200CDI pushing out 101kw as well as a different and more powerful tuned 2.2 litre which will offer a respectable 127kw. The GLA 250 4Matic will be done with the 0-100km/h sprint in 6.5 seconds and will go all the way to a top speed of 230km/h. Mercedes's claimed combined fuel consumption will be 7.1 litres per 100km's.

Engines will be ignited by a Eco start/stop button. Engines will either be driven through a 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission or alternatively by a 6 speed manual transmission.

The GLA is set to incorporate the latest generation multimedia system which will incorporate various apps, iPhone integration and a Siri voice control system amongst others.

Rivals to the GLA will be that of the BMW X3 and the Audi Q3.

The GLA will be shown at the Johannesburg Motor Show in October 2013.
